BORDENTOWN CITY HONORS 2009-2010 POSTER SIGN CONTEST WINNERS

BORDENTOWN CITY HONORS 2009-2010 POSTER SIGN CONTEST WINNERS

Back Row (Left to Right):  Mayor James Lynch, Chief Matthew Simmons, Lieutenant Fred Miller.
Front Row (Left to Right):  James Porcelli, Ryan Martin, Abigail Paul, Amelia Ditolvo, Danielle MacFarlane, Leanna Diaz, Kristin Stettner, Drew Washington, Riley O'Malley.

As part of a comprehensive, city-wide public safety program, Bordentown City officials announced the winners of the City's Community Awareness Poster Sign Initiative (C.A.P.S.I.).  All nine fourth grade winners were recognized for their contribution toward increasing community awareness of the importance of driver safety at the April 12th City Commissioners meeting.  Fourth grade students from MacFarland Intermediate School were invited to submit posters expressing the need for drivers to be more aware of poor driving habits that endanger the safety and welfare of Bordentown City Children.  The City had winning submissions turned into metal signs that will be posted in the winners' neighborhoods, along with their names, as a constant reminder to drivers to slow down, minimize distractions, and be aware that children may be playing in the area.  Each of the contest winners received an official copy of their sign that will be posted in town.

"The purpose of this initiative was to send a clear message to drivers that they need to slow down and make children's safety a priority," said Mayor Lynch.  "What better way to send this message than to have the children deliver it directly?  The hardest part was narrowing down all the great submissions we received."

"This initiative is part of an ongoing partnership that we established between the community and the police department to alert all motorists driving in the City that children are present and they need to slow down and drive with caution," said Chief Simmons.  "We're all guilty of exceeding the speed limit from time to time, but hopefully now drivers will be encouraged to slow down."

"In this day and age, there are a million and one distractions that contribute to driver carelessness, but no cell phone call or meeting is that important that it warrants compromising the safety of our children," said Deputy Mayor Heather Cheesman.  "This is a great initiative and I want to thank the Mayor and Chief for spearheading it."

"Our police department does a great job with daily radar enforcement, but they can't be everywhere all the time," said Commissioner Zigmont Targonski.  "Hopefully, this contest will serve as a permanent reminder to drivers that they need to be a willing part of the solution.  I'd like to thank the students, the Mayor, and the Police Department for their commitment to our city."

The poster submissions were judged by a committee comprised of Mayor James Lynch, Chief Matthew Simmons, Lieutenant Fred Miller, and Patrolman Joe Bourn.
