What It Is – Hydrant flushing is the process of opening fire hydrants to let water flow at high speed. This helps remove sediment, rust, and other buildup from water mains.
Why It’s Done – Flushing maintains water quality, ensures proper chlorine distribution, and keeps hydrants in working condition for fire protection.
Temporary Water Issues – During flushing, you may notice discolored water (due to stirred-up minerals like iron and manganese) or slight pressure changes. This is normal and temporary.
Not a Waste of Water – Though it looks wasteful, flushing is necessary for maintaining a clean water supply. The amount of water used is minimal compared to the benefits.
Safe to Drink? – If water appears discolored, it’s best to run cold water for a few minutes until it clears up. The water is still treated, but it might not look or taste ideal.
How Long It Takes – Flushing usually takes a few minutes to an hour per hydrant, depending on the system's needs.
