Operation Safe Summer
Kick Off Date – June 8, 2022

The Bordentown City Police along with Bordentown Township Police will be issuing ice cream “tickets” to once again promote helmet safety to local youth. Annual reporting by the Division of Highway Traffic Safety shows that individuals are killed or seriously injured while riding their bicycles and a head injury is the most serious injury and most common cause of death among bicyclists.

In New Jersey, anyone under the age of 17 is required to wear an approved helmet when cycling, roller-skating or skateboarding. Injuries can happen anywhere, including parks, bike paths and driveways so anyone and everyone riding a bicycle or engaging in activities that could cause head injuries should wear a helmet.

For six years, in order to promote safe riding, both the Bordentown City and Bordentown Twp. Police Departments have partnered with local ice cream shops and officers will issue “tickets” for a free ice cream treat to local youth who are seen wearing their helmets while riding bicycles, scooters, skateboards, etc… City officers will be handing out “tickets” that can be redeemed at Smilie’s Sweet Spot and Township Officers will be handing out “tickets” to be redeemed at Bordentown Creamery

Bordentown City Chief Lafferty and Bordentown Township Chief Pesce hope this program will encourage local youth to wear helmets in order to prevent traumatic brain injuries and also believe that this is a great way for local youth to interact with our officers in a positive way. Of course, the wearing of helmets is also encouraged for everyone who engages in bike riding, skateboarding, roller-skating etc. to prevent head injuries.

The Bordentown City Police Department is a proud participant in the Project Medicine Drop program. The department’s Project Medicine Drop Box is located in the lobby of Police Headquarters and residents may visit the drop box at any time, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year, to dispose of their unused or excess medications.
