WATER UTILITY SUPERINTENDENT – BORDENTOWN CITY. Responsibilities: Position Summary: Bordentown City is seeking a Water Utility Superintendent.
JOB SUMMARY: This position coordinates and supervises assigned functions of the Water System, which may include the construction, installation, operations of the City’s water treatment plant and water distribution system or customer service, plant operations and understanding of process systems including radionuclide removal, air stripping process, pH adjustment, corrosion control and disinfection processes, meter reading and maintenance, data management, regulatory compliance and materials control operations; and performs other technical, administrative and supervisory work as required. The incumbent works within a general outline of work to be performed and develops work methods and sequences under the Water Department superintendent.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Assists the Water Utility Superintendent with the daily management of department operations by planning, coordinating and supervising assigned functions of the department. Supervises subordinate staff. Supervisory duties include scheduling; instructing; assigning, reviewing and planning work of others; maintaining standards; coordinating activities; assisting with the selection of new employees; acting on employee problems; recommending employee discipline and discharge. Reviews the work of subordinates for completeness and accuracy; evaluates and makes recommendations as appropriate; offers training, advice and assistance as needed. Assists in preparing and administering the division budget; requisitions necessary equipment, tools, supplies and materials. Assists the Superintendent in ensuring compliance with applicable state and federal water quality regulations; prepares periodic reports as required and signs/submits submissions in the absence of the Superintendent. Oversees treatment plant operations and processes that include radionuclide removal, VOC removal via air stripping, pH adjustment and chlorination. Oversees the daily maintenance and repair of water main lines, service to property lines, fire hydrants, valves, storage tanks and related water distribution services. Oversees customer service activities, including meter reading and maintenance, data management operations, billing procedures, handling of customer requests and complaints, etc.; Plans the department’s daily activities. Streamlines current business practices to allow for more efficiency as it relates to assisting customers with resolving their issues and concerns. Ensures efficient and effective staff response to all work orders. Inspects works in progress and at completion for compliance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, regulations, contracts, permits, and/or standards of quality and safety; Gives technical advice and assistance to co-workers and subordinates as needed. Inspects equipment for proper and safe working condition; coordinates the timely maintenance and repair of equipment as needed. Assists in coordinating assigned activities and functions with those of other City departments, County departments and outside agencies as appropriate. Receives and responds to inquiries, complaints, and requests for assistance from customers and the general public regarding areas of responsibility. Performs general administrative / clerical work as required, including but not limited to preparing reports and correspondence, conducting and attending meetings, entering and retrieving computer data, copying and filing documents, etc. Attends meetings, training, conferences, seminars, etc., as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills; and Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK: High school diploma or GED. Five (5) years of relevant prior experience. Valid New Jersey Driver’s License. New Jersey License T-3 and W-3.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is considered light in nature and involves walking or standing much of the time and involves exerting up to 20 pounds of force on a recurring basis, or skill, adeptness, and speed in the use of fingers, hands or limbs on repetitive operation of mechanical or electronic office or shop machines or tools within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy.
